Rodrigues hoping for Saints success

Southampton FA Cup-winning captain Peter Rodrigues is hoping Saints can repeat their 1976 heroics against Manchester United this weekend.Sir Alex Ferguson takes his Premier League champions to St Mary's in a repeat of the final 33 years ago in which the south coast side - then, as now, a division below - caused a huge shock by beating United 1-0.

It would be an even bigger surprise if the modern-day Saints could emulate that success, which came courtesy of a goal from Bobby Stokes.

But the man who lifted the cup on that famous sunny May afternoon at Wembley knows better than most that anything is possible.

"Things happen in the cup and it would be a dream to see Southampton win," said Rodrigues.

"But even if we earned a replay at Old Trafford it would be a big achievement."

Saints go into the game on the back of winless run stretching back to November 22, which has seen them slump to 23rd in the Championship table.

Current boss Jan Poortvliet has already delved into the transfer market in the opening few hours of the January transfer window to shore up his ailing squad, bringing in former  left-back Lee Molyneux.
